Oriental rugs are typically woven from side to side across the warp strings which means there has to be an end point.

After the hole is fully repaired the area is trimmed down so that it matches the rest of the pile height. Now you are ready to cut. The repair expert will first secure the fringe and then cut to an even length if it is messy or damaged. At this stage you don t want to cut all the way through then slowly finish cutting through the rug following the score while pulling up on the part you are cutting off.

This too requires expertise because it is best to maintain the rug s symmetry and pattern if you want also to maintain its value and aesthetic appeal. Use a straight edge 1 1 2 2 from the crease and score the rug. Bleached fringing is not appropriate and will contrast too much with the dusky colors of an authentic oriental rug. While maintaining as much of the rug we do our best to match the rug so it continues its symmetric design.

If the rug is older and is thought to have a high value do not cut the fringe as originality is a factor in collector carpets. And also as noted it is not at all unusual for those who want to use an oriental rug in a very specific room or space to have it cut down to size.
